After enjoying a successful revival in 2008, the Columbus Day Parade of North Jersey is coming back in 2009. The parade will take place on Sunday, Oct. 4, stepping off at noon on Main Street in Hackensack.
“Last year’s parade was such a huge success. We were able to bring the community together to celebrate not only Italian traditions but so many others as well,” said Mayor Michael Melfi.
Parade Co-Chairman Jack Zisa was instrumental in bringing the tradition back to Hackensack and is dedicated to keeping it alive.
“This event manages to bring all segments of the community to celebrate together," said Zisa, former mayor of Hackensack. “It is one of the few events that people of all ages can truly enjoy.”
There was never a dull moment during the 2008 parade as marching bands, both high school and professional, from across New Jersey carried their various styles of music through the streets of Hackensack. Student organizations and recreational teams joined the lineup as well as police and fire departments. There were even characters from the Broadway production of Cirque du Soleil and belly dancers. “After such a wonderful line up last year, we look forward to even more participation for this year’s parade,” said Parade Co-Chairman Ralph Contini.
